This week is heavy on one end and genuinely fun on the other, and honestly, that’s most weeks (welcome to Boston in August).

We’ve got a Hyde Park shooting outside a restaurant a lot of us have eaten at, a boat ride to Spectacle Island built entirely for the ultimate Caribbean experience, and a gala in Randolph you should already be thinking about nominating someone for.

Let’s get into it.

Early Monday morning, outside Little Haiti International Cuisine on Hyde Park Ave, a fight turned into gunfire.

Five people were shot.

Ky Mani Korey Reynolds, 26, of Dorchester, died.

By Tuesday, Oliver Derima, 27, of Randolph, was arraigned on murder charges and held without bail, hidden from courtroom cameras, pleading not guilty through his attorney.

Derima says he was shot twice during the same brawl, too, and drove himself to Boston Medical Center afterward.

Police say his clothes at the hospital matched surveillance footage of the shooter.

His lawyer says it’s the wrong guy and is already raising questions about ballistics and casings.

A probable cause hearing is set for September 4.

This isn’t abstract crime-blotter news.

Little Haiti International Cuisine is a name plenty of us recognize, in a neighborhood plenty of us drive through.

The DA called it “an utter disregard for the sanctity of life,” and that’s not an overstatement.

It happened during the city’s own National Night Out push against violence.

This one’s going to keep coming back around.

Mark September 4 and pay attention.

On Sunday, August 9, a 30-minute ferry ride from Boston’s Fan Pier drops you on Spectacle Island for what organizers are calling the first fully curated island experience of its kind here, built for the ultimate Caribbean experience.

The lineup includes Audatrixxx Bros, DJ SuperDuke, DJ Vyper, Justin Petty, and Freda Rara, moving through soca, konpa, reggae, raboday, and afrobeats, with sunset views of the skyline behind you.

Food and drinks are for sale on the island (Navet 1804 is pouring), and after-hours access opens up the beaches and trails once the crowds thin.

It’s presented by a coalition worth noting too — MM Elite Events, Caribbean Integration Community Development, We Rise Consulting, Navet 1804, Boston Harbor Now, and SparkFm — which tells you this isn’t a one-off.

It’s a group betting on doing this again.

The U.S. Haitian Chamber of Commerce just confirmed the Second Annual Haitian American Business Summit for October 31, followed the next night by the 7th Annual National Haitian American Young Professional Awards Gala at Blue Hills Ballroom in Randolph.

It’s the kind of event that becomes an institution, and it’s still rooted here, not in Miami or New York.
