This is one of those weeks when the events calendar carries more weight than the actual news, which tells you something about where the community’s energy is right now (I’m choosing to read that as a good sign).

Malden Public Library is putting a Haitian Creole picture book in front of a room full of three-year-olds, which is smaller than it sounds and matters more than it looks.

Down at 131 Beverly Street, twoubadou musicians and Haitian authors are sharing a room for one afternoon.

And if you’ve got a babysitter lined up for September 20, Tabou Combo is playing downtown.

On Thursday, September 17 at 6 pm, the Malden Public Library is hosting a Welcoming Week storytime built around “Dumpling Day,” and the copy they’re reading from exists in Haitian Creole alongside English, Portuguese, Chinese, and Spanish.

There’s a free take-and-make lunchbox craft for kids three and up, and a new children’s librarian will run the session.

Welcoming Week is a national campaign, and most libraries mark it with a generic multicultural display.

Malden did something more specific: they actually stocked a Creole translation of a real, working children’s book, not a token gesture but a book that a Creole-speaking parent can read aloud without translating on the fly.

That’s a detail most libraries in this state haven’t bothered with.

It’s a Thursday evening, it’s free, and it’s the kind of low-key outing where you show up, your kid gets a craft, and you get to watch a librarian read a story in a language that isn’t usually on the shelf.

For us, this is less about the event itself and more about a public institution in Malden making a deliberate choice to include Haitian families in a way that required actual effort, not just a banner, and that’s worth noticing and showing up for.

Tabou Combo and Anie Alerte are headlining “Paris in Boston” at Big Night Live on Sunday, September 20, doors at 7 pm, 21 and up.

Two of konpa’s most established names share one bill at a venue that usually books acts nobody’s grandmother has heard of.

Ticket pickup points are set up at Haitian-owned businesses in Malden, Hyde Park, and Brockton, not just an online link.

That’s the organizers routing the show through the same neighborhoods that would show up to see it anyway, which is either smart marketing or genuine community respect, and honestly it can be both.

For us, this is a rare night when two acts from our parents’ generation of konpa are playing a major room in their own city, and that combination doesn’t come around often enough to skip.

The Toussaint Louverture Cultural Center is hosting its Twoubadou & Book Festival on Sunday, September 13, from 4 to 8 pm at 131 Beverly Street in Boston, with tickets at $15.
